In yoga, we talk a lot about balance and harmony in everyday life, and within ourselves. Part of that balance is understanding and embracing something called shakti “divine feminine energy.”

What Is Feminine Energy?
Think of divine feminine energy (Shakti) as a powerful and nurturing force that exists within all of us, regardless of gender. It’s like an inner source of strength, compassion, and creativity. It dances with the Shiva, the masculine force in Hindu mythology. BOTH of these energies reside within us. The goal is to find a beautiful balance between the two.
Let’s look at aspects of both (Shiva) masculine and (Shakti) feminine energy.
Divine feminine energy is often associated with qualities like:
- Nurturing: The caring, “mother,” loving energy that helps you take care of yourself and those around you.
- Intuition: Your inner voice, your gut feeling, or that sense of knowing what’s right for you. It’s about trusting yourself and your instincts.
- Creativity: This energy is a wellspring of creativity and imagination. It’s what helps you express yourself through art, music, writing, or any form of self-expression.
- Compassion: The kindness and empathy you have for others, the ability to understand and support them in their journey.
- Connection: Divine feminine energy also emphasizes the importance of connection – not just with others but with nature and the world around you. It’s like feeling one with everything.
From an energetic perspective, the feminine force in tantra is about movement: The world of the feminine is always in flux, never static. It’s associated with constant change in a world that’s governed by the three gunas. Think of it like water or a river, while the masculine energy would be the river banks – the container of that movement.
Masculine energy looks like:
- Strength: Physical and emotional strength, representing resilience and the ability to withstand challenges. This often aligns with the traditional provider role, where individuals take responsibility for providing for their families and themselves.
- Assertiveness & Competitiveness: Assertive and decisive traits, facilitating goal-setting and achievement. Also encouraging a competitive spirit, driving individuals to strive for success and excel in their endeavors.
- Independence: Independence and self-sufficiency, encouraging autonomy and self-reliance. This means it is action-oriented, encouraging taking initiative and pursuing goals with determination and a willingness to take calculated risks in pursuit of objectives or adventures.
- Logic: It emphasizes logic, reasoning, and analytical thinking, aiding in problem-solving and decision-making. This energy values order, structure, and organization, contributing to effective planning and productivity.
- Protectiveness: Masculine traits often include a protective instinct, fostering a sense of responsibility for the well-being of loved ones.
From an energetic perspective, the masculine force in tantra is about stillness: If the feminine is always moving, like the wind, the masculine has depth, devotion and stillness. Like a tree. It’s the energetic force that’s witnessing the movement (instead of moving)
Do you see why you need both feminine and masculine energies? BOTH have value. We need the ability to desire, emote and act. We also need the ability to ground, deepen, and experience “witness consciousness.” This is the perfect example of polarity. There has to be an equal opposite energy to keep balance. BOTH are needed. Just like you can’t appreciate the light without the dark. Or know happiness without sadness. You need to connect with the power of both these energies within you.
You fall out of balance when you let one energy overpower the other. And, unfortunately, the “toxic mimic” aspects of the masculine energy in our culture have been overpowering the feminine for a long time. Stereotypes have played a large role in that.
Please note: the divine feminine is not about being “girly” or stereotypically feminine; it’s about embracing the yearning, the desire and the deep capacity for love that exists within all of us.
Masculine/feminine polarity work is about finding your unique inner balance: nurturing yourself, trusting your instincts, and expressing your unique, creative self. 🌸✨

- Balance and Harmony: True balance comes from integrating the two energies(masculine and feminine energies). When you connect with your feminine side, it’s like finding that missing piece of the puzzle. You become more open and receptive. You’re better able to flow with life’s ups and downs.
- Empowerment: It empowers you to live authentically and confidently because you’re connected to your true longings and desires. Like stepping into your own strength, without conforming to external expectations. This empowerment helps you set healthy boundaries, make choices that serve you, and stand up for what you believe in.
- Connection to Nature and the Universe: Feminine energy is often associated with a deep connection to nature and the universe. When you connect to this energy, you experience a sense of belonging and interconnectedness, bringing peace and spiritual fulfillment.

How To Tap Into Your Feminine Energy
But Brett, I am a woman so isn’t my divine feminine energy automatically being embodied? NO!! Especially when society tells you that feminine qualities should be suppressed🙄. Here are some ways to tap into your feminine energy and embrace that inner goddess…
Develop Your Intuition
Start with developing your intuition by tuning inward. It’s like fine-tuning your inner GPS, that sixth sense we like to refer to as the third eye. Practice listening to that quiet, inner voice that guides you. Trust your gut feelings and instincts. You can do this through mindfulness, meditation, or simply take moments of silence to listen to what your intuition is telling you. Express and Embody Your Feelings
Allow yourself to feel your feelings fully. Give your emotions permission to be heard. Don’t judge or suppress them. Journaling, art, or talking with a trusted friend can help you process and release your feelings. Working with the second chakra(sacral chakra) is a great option too 🧡. As is somatic yoga or yoga therapy. Get big and loud. Yell. Use your voice or hit a pillow. Develop a rage ritual.
Make Your Own Self-Care A Priority
Prioritizing self-care is a cornerstone of nurturing your feminine energy. Set aside time for activities you find pleasurable. Part of coming into your feminine energy is coming into your pleasure. And no, that doesn’t just include sex. Maybe you want to ice skate, pole dance, read a novel, or lounge in the bath for hours.
What juicy movements feel AMAZING to you? Now that you’ve developed your intuition and can feel your feelings, listen! Tune it into the things that make you feel good. This might include bubble baths or walks in nature, sure, but it could also include lying on your mat and undulating. Or rolling your hips and growling at the roof. The point is, you do you 😉, whatever that looks like.
Activate and Allow Your Playful Side Out
Engage in activities that bring joy and fun into your life. Dance like nobody’s watching, sing in the shower, or explore creative hobbies. This playful energy can rekindle your sense of wonder and creativity. The shakti feminine energy responds extremely well to play and frivolous fun.
Allow Time For Grounding, Healing, and Balancing Your Energy
Make space for grounding, healing, and balancing. Spend time in nature, walk barefoot on the earth, or practice grounding yoga poses (this yoga for women post could give you some ideas).
Healing might involve seeking therapy, practicing forgiveness or working with your chakras.
Balancing your energy means finding harmony between your feminine and masculine qualities, recognizing that both are valuable 🎉.
When I think feminine energy I think fluidity. Allow yourself to grow, change, and evolve with grace. Embrace life’s transitions, whether they’re small or monumental. TRUST that each transformation brings new wisdom and beauty into your life. Work with your sacral center to embrace the ebb and flow of life.
Tapping into your feminine is a journey of self-discovery, self-compassion, self-expression and LETTING GO. You can’t be in your feminine and be controlling. This energy is about RELINQUISHING CONTROL and trusting that you are held by your own inner divine masculine. Remember, there’s no rush; it’s a beautiful ongoing process of becoming more authentically you.
Certain barriers can get in the way of fully embracing your feminine energy. These barriers can be like roadblocks on the path to connecting with your true self. But, guess what? You can overcome these barriers!!
It’s like clearing a path to connect with your most authentic self. Here’s how:
- Self-Doubt: One of the biggest barriers is self-doubt. That nagging voice in your head that says, “I’m not good enough” or “I can’t relinquish control – everything will fall apart.” Start practicing self-compassion. Treat yourself with the same kindness and encouragement that you’d offer a friend. Remember, you are worthy just as you are.
- External Expectations: Society often expects you to suppress your feminine side. Overcoming this barrier means letting go of the need to please everyone and embracing your own values and desires. Give yourself permission to be YOU. For example, you might not feel you are worthy if you are not not accomplishing something. Give yourself permission to rest, it’s just as important.
- Fear of Vulnerability: Vulnerability can feel scary. Opening up your heart and showing your true self, warts and all 😱. But it’s also where your authentic feminine energy thrives. Practice vulnerability in safe spaces. Share your feelings and experiences with other women, trusted friends or a therapist. It’ll let a little more light into your life.
- Perfectionism: The quest for perfection can be a big obstacle(trust me, recovering perfectionist right here 🙋♀️). Remind yourself that perfection doesn’t exist. Embrace your imperfections, because they make you beautifully unique. You can’t learn and grow without making mistakes. Welcome them as they come and embrace the lesson.
- Busy-ness: Staying busy distracts you from connecting with your feminine energy. I am very guilty of this. Prioritize yourself and your needs. Create space in your schedule for activities that nourish your soul, whether it’s yoga, meditation, or simply enjoying a quiet moment with a book.
- Comparison: “Comparisonitis” is another common barrier. Measuring your worth by someone else’s standards? Who does that serve? Certainly not you. Practice gratitude for who you are and what you have. Celebrate your unique qualities and the journey you’re on. Remember, you are a unique goddess and incomparable.
- Mind-Body Disconnect: Practice mindfulness through activities like yoga, meditation, or even journaling. It’ll bridge the gap between your thoughts and your body’s wisdom.
Overcoming these barriers and embracing femininity is a journey. It’s like clearing away obstacles one by one to reveal your authentic, radiant self. And as you do, you’ll find that your feminine energy starts to flow more freely, bringing balance and authenticity to your life. You’ve got this! 💪💕
How can I tap into my feminine energy if I’ve been in a masculine-dominated environment for a long time?

How do you know if your feminine energy is blocked?
Feeling overwhelmed, struggling to express emotions, a strong desire for perfection, controlling tendencies, challenges in relationships, and physical symptoms like chronic tension are signs of blockage. Lack of creativity, disconnection from nature, repetitive unproductive patterns, and low self-esteem, difficulty receiving love or help are also indicators.
