Everything is energy. You’ve probably heard this saying before, and if you’re on your healing journey, you may have come across some form of energy healing.
Today I want to introduce you one of my favorite somatic therapy techniques…
Somatic energy healing!
It’s a holistic practice that taps into the body’s inherent energy to bring about balance and healing. Using somatic experiencing therapy, somatic energy healing work redirects healing energy to clear blockages and restore harmony.
This happens many ways: through touch, breathwork, and visualization, and anything that can shift and align the body’s energy field.
Energy healing can shift not only your subconscious mind, but also any blockages from traumatic events, mental health issues, and the root cause of physical sensations and pain. Through somatic experiencing, you can improve imbalances and restore health and harmony, and maybe even activate the healing powers of energy work too!
Let’s start with the basics of this holistic approach to the healing process…
What Is Somatic Energy?
Somatic energy is the the stored energies within your body. Somatic healing techniques use energy work to address physical symptoms (like physical pain), chronic stress, and trauma symptoms.
“Somatic” comes from the Greek word “soma,” which means “the living body.” This term highlights a key idea in somatic therapy: the connection between your bodily sensations and your mental, emotional, and spiritual states.
The core belief of somatic therapy is that your thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations are deeply intertwined, creating what’s often referred to as the “bodymind.” By engaging mindfully with one aspect, you can facilitate change and healing in the others. For example, maybe your physical pain is rooted in stored energy in the body from a traumatic event. Through somatic energy healing, you can process past trauma, heal emotional pain, and connect with your mind body and spirit.
You are constantly surrounded by all different forms of energy, from electric and magnetic to subtle and light energies. Your physical and spiritual experience inextricably linked creating a bodymind that you can heal with somatic therapy and somatic experience.
When your vibrational frequencies become disrupted or blocked, it can lead to different body sensations, like physical discomfort, or sometimes emotional distress, and a sense of stagnation. Physical symptoms are rooted in the nervous system and the mind body connection.
Blocks in your energy field can lead to a chronically online autonomic nervous system. Your bodily sensations, nervous system, and physical symptoms will reflect your energy. Somatic energy healing helps realign your energy and the frequencies you come across each day.
Through sensation awareness, somatic work allows energy to flow freely, promoting a state of vibrant well-being. This practice not only supports emotional and physical health but is accessible to everyone, often with minimal to no negative side effects.

How Somatic Energy Healing Works
Somatic therapy is based on the belief that your human body is made up of energy that flows through specific pathways known as meridians. When these pathways get blocked, it can disrupt your overall well-being. You might feel this in the form of bodily sensations, chronic pain, or in your nervous system after a traumatic event. Anyone who has experienced trauma would benefit from somatic therapy.
Somatic energy healing aims to clear these blockages and restore the natural flow of energy throughout the body, through somatic therapies like sound healing, breathing exercises, body awareness, and somatic experiencing therapy. Holistic coaching uses hypnosis to release tension
This type of alternative medicine works by interacting with the body’s energy fields (what we know as chakras in yoga) to find balance and promote healing. It operates on the idea that we have an invisible force field, or aura, surrounding us that holds our thoughts, emotions, and memories.
If we can tap into the present moment and cultivate body awareness, then we can align body mind and spirit and have a somatic energy healing experience. Some call this somatic therapy to body psychotherapy.
By working with your energy field, energy healing can positively affect our physical, mental, and emotional states. You might see significant improvement in being able to self regulate, move through and past a traumatic event, and to resolve physical issues or mental health issues.
Change happens in a somatic way, on a cellular level as well as in a person’s mind with somatic therapy. This form of healing is a type of energy work that’s good for physical or emotional pain, and even post traumatic stress disorder and processing a traumatic event.
This somatic therapy practice involves engaging in mind-body exercises that focus on being present in the moment, using the body’s inherent wisdom to guide the healing process. A somatic therapist incorporates somatic energy healing in their sessions. You can schedule a somatic healing session with a practicioner near you. Or you can learn these techniques to use on your own, anywhere, anytime.
Benefits Of Somatic Energy Healing
Somatic therapy helps you develop a heightened sense of mind body connection. Tuning into this deep understanding allows you to shift the energy within, easing stress and addressing areas where your body may be holding onto stagnant energy that no longer serves you.
Often, it’s this stuck energy that contributes to physical symptoms, emotional imbalance, or a sense of misalignment in life. The mind and bodily experience inextricably linked on a cellular level, so somatic therapists focus on resolving traumatic experiences in the body therefore somatic work is key.
Your body is trying to send data to you at all times, and somatic therapy learns how to read this data to regulate your nervous system and clear your mind and body connection from any energy blocks.
As Bessel Van Der Kolk, the author of The Body Keeps Score, puts it:
“Our gut feelings signal what is safe, life-sustaining, or threatening, even if we cannot quite explain why we feel a particular way… If you have a comfortable connection with your inner sensations—if you can trust them to give you accurate information—you will feel in charge of your body, your feelings, and yourself.”
When you reconnect your mind and body with their innate wisdom, you come back to a sense of “home” within yourself. Somatic therapy helps with this. This grounded connection helps you release old energy patterns and habitual behavior tied to past experiences, allowing you to restore balance and harmony in your body, mind, and spirit, as well as your nervous system. A somatic therapist can help, especially in using imagery to channel energy in processing traumatic experiences.
Somatic therapy offers many benefits that touch every aspect of your being. Not only can it calm the mind, but it can also strengthen the body, boost immunity, and encourage spiritual growth. Some key benefits used in somatic energy work include:
- Deep relaxation
- Better sleep
- Reduced blood pressure
- Pain relief
- Detoxification
- Enhanced immunity
- Spiritual growth
- Increased energy flow
Somatic therapies come in many forms, but they all work with a shared goal: to help you heal from within.
Whether you’re dealing with chronic pain, anxiety, depression, PTSD, or emotional wounds, somatic experiencing can offer support and healing for issues affecting your mind, body, and spirit.

Common Somatic Energy Healing Techniques
Somatic Yoga
Somatic yoga combines movement, breathing, and mindfulness to balance your body’s energy. It helps release tension, improve mental clarity, and make you feel more connected to yourself. Somatic experiencing can be included in your practice, to deepen your healing.
Breathwork (Pranayama)
Breathwork is about consciously controlling your breathing to release stored-up energy and bring calm and clarity to both your mind and body. It’s a great way to clear emotional blocks and reset your energy, and often incorporates somatic energy.
Reiki
Reiki is a simple Japanese practice where a healer places their hands on or near your body to help balance your energy. It’s all about clearing out any blockages so your natural energy flow can do its thing, helping you feel more relaxed and grounded.
Reflexology
Reflexology focuses on applying pressure to specific spots on your feet, hands, or even ears, which are believed to be connected to other parts of your body. It’s like giving your whole body a little tune-up just by pressing the right points.
Crystal Healing
Crystal healing involves using specific stones that are believed to have unique energies. Placing these crystals on or around your body is thought to help with things like stress relief, pain management, and emotional healing.
Acupuncture
This well-known Chinese practice involves inserting tiny needles into specific points in your body. These points are connected to energy pathways and can help with all kinds of issues, from stress to physical pain.
Hypnotherapy
In hypnotherapy, you’re guided into a deeply relaxed state—almost like a trance—where you can tap into your subconscious mind. This helps uncover emotional or spiritual roots of any issues you’re dealing with, leading to deep healing.
Visualization
Visualization is all about using the power of your mind to picture yourself healthy and well. For example, if you’re dealing with an illness, you might imagine your body healing and feeling strong again.
Here are some examples of visualizations you could try during somatic energy healing:
- Healing Light: Imagine a bright, warm light flowing through your body, starting at the top of your head and moving down to your toes, clearing away tension and negativity as it passes.
- Energy Release: Picture a specific area of your body that feels tense or heavy. Visualize that tension as a dark cloud, and slowly see it dissolve or float away with each exhale.
- Grounding Roots: Envision roots growing from the soles of your feet, deep into the earth, anchoring you and pulling nourishing energy up through your body with each breath.
- Flowing River: Imagine your energy as a river flowing smoothly throughout your body, washing away blockages or stuck emotions and leaving you feeling cleansed and refreshed.
- Protective Shield: Visualize a protective, shimmering bubble surrounding your body, keeping you safe from external stressors while allowing positive energy to flow in.
- Heart Expansion: Focus on your heart center and imagine it expanding with every breath, filling you with love, compassion, and healing energy that radiates outward.
These visualizations can help guide your energy healing practice by promoting relaxation, emotional release, and a deeper mind-body connection.
Color Healing
Different colors have different effects on the body and mind. For example, red can boost your energy, while blue can help you relax. Color healing uses these subtle shifts to bring harmony and balance back into your system.
Energy Work
Energy work is based on the idea that our bodies are made of energy, and sometimes that energy gets a little out of whack. By working with the body’s energy fields, this practice aims to bring everything back into balance and help you feel more at peace.
Sound Healing
This one’s all about using sound to promote healing—whether it’s through singing bowls, tuning forks, or even specific music. Different sounds can calm or energize you, helping to restore balance and harmony in your body.
What Happens During a Somatic Experience?
In a healing session, you’re in the driver’s seat. First, you’ll meet with a practitioner to chat about what’s going on in your life and what you want to focus on. The initial session is all about getting you comfortable and relaxed. Or if you do this on your own, you’ll do a check-in with yourself before starting.
You’ll kick things off with some breathing exercises and a guided meditation to help your subconscious mind start letting go. This is where you may include some somatic yoga poses too. From there, you’ll dive into your inner world, using visualization and other techniques to shift any energy or patterns you’re ready to change or release.
You’ll feel supported and secure throughout the process, and many people notice a sense of lightness and transformation as they go through the session.
By the end, you’ll remember everything that happened and start to see positive changes both mentally and physically, and even, spiritually.
One of the great things about working with energy is that it typically doesn’t come with any negative side effects. It’s a gentle practice that almost anyone can benefit from without discomfort.
Most of the treatments are non-invasive and shouldn’t leave you feeling unwell. However, if you’re particularly sensitive to energy work, you might experience a bit of light-headedness or an emotional release, especially if you’re addressing deep-seated issues or old traumas.
This is actually a good sign—it means your body is clearing out old blockages to make room for positive change.
How To Get Started
Getting started with energy is both exciting and accessible, and there are plenty of options to explore.
Whether you begin with something as straightforward as wearing a piece of crystal jewelry or dive into a more immersive experience like booking a Reiki session or joining a Qigong class, you’ll find a variety of ways to try this out.
