To be human can be hard and you may find yourself at times feeling alone or isolated as you navigate tough choices and experiences. In times of stress like these, I find that my yoga practice, and especially chanting mantras, can guide me back to a place of grace and strength. Humee Hum Brahm Hum might just be the ultimate mantra to offer support in isolating and difficult times.
Humee Hum Brahm Hum Meaning
Humee Hum Brahm Hum is a Sanskrit mantra that is both simple and profound. It translates to “We are We. We are God.” with other variations such as, “We are We. We are One.” and “We are We. We are Divine.”
At the heart of this mantra, is the reflection on the idea that we are all connected in Source, the power that all creation comes from. This mantra serves as a reminder that you, me, and we – are all spirit. Connected. Yoga teaches that your body is a vessel for Source energy to flow through. You are in human form to work through your soul’s karma before you return again to Source.
Benefits Of Chanting Humee Hum Brahm Hum Mantra
Some of the many benefits that the Humee Hum Brahm Hum mantra provides are:
Reduces Feelings of Isolation and Loneliness
Humee Hum Brahm Hum reinforces the notion that you are connected to God, to Source, to Infinity. This mantra helps to relieve loneliness, feelings of disconnection, and unworthiness.
Stimulates The Vagus Nerve
Humming is a super activator of the vagus nerve, which is the largest nerve in the parasympathetic nervous system. When you chant Humee Hum Brahm Hum, there is a lot of vibration and humming involved so you naturally induce this relaxation response in your body.
Enhances Problem Solving
The Humee Hum Brahm Hum mantra is especially helpful when you are in search of an answer or solution to a circumstance you are faced with in your life. This mantra helps you to enter a state of curiosity and satisfaction which enables you to become more observant and able to tune in with what is (Source).
There are 15,000 words in the English language that come from Sanskrit. Other languages such as French, German, and Spanish also have words that derive from Sanskrit. Hum is one of those words.
Almost universally, Hum (or hmmm) expresses contemplation or curiosity. Think of a time when someone asked you a question and you needed a moment to first think of your answer. Did you let out a “hmmm” from your throat?
Hum (or hmmm) can also express satisfaction. Think of a time where you ate something delicious. Without thinking, maybe you let out a long, deep, “hmmm” from your body.
Through practice of this mantra, you are able to deepen your experience with this sound and at the same time create a strengthened relationship with your sense of satisfaction, contemplation, and curiosity in your body.
Opens Your Heart Chakra
Humee Hum Brahm Hum is a potent Heart Chakra (Anahata) practice. It will be extra potent with the incorporation of the mudra I’m going to introduce you to in a moment.
Fun fact, the heart’s electrical field is about 60 times greater than what is generated by the brain and the magnetic field of the heart can be detected up to 3 feet away (!!!) from your body.
The realization that your heart is the main point of your aura, of your essence, is potentially life changing. When you work with your Heart Chakra using the Humee Hum Brahm Hum mantra you remove blockages and make space for Kundalini energy to flow optimally through your chakra system.
The mudra you’ll use with this mantra (details below) utilizes your arms in an elevated position in front of your body. This has the added effect of stimulating your heart chakra by working with the heart micro orbit. Anytime you’re working with your arms in Kundalini yoga, your arms are like little acupuncture needles stimulating your heart. It’s like acupressure in motion to stimulate your Heart Chakra.
In the mudra posture that I’ll describe for you below, you’ll “float” your right hand and arm above your left, with space kept between your right and left arm. When you have them separated like this, you’ll work with the brachial nerves (your sharing and caring nerves) of both sides of the body that come off the spine, through the shoulders and down the arms. Each side of your body is getting equal work, equal treatment.
One final thought I want to share is that the left side of your body is the receptive and the right is projecting. This mudra heightens receiving and projecting, which assists the ability for this mantra to support enhanced problem solving.

How To Practice Humee Hum Brahm Hum Meditation
Your meditation practice is exactly that – yours. The mudra that I share with you below is a great option for pairing with the Humee Hum Brahm Hum mantra but depending on your personal circumstances you may want to try other Kundalini mudras, too. Bear Grip or Buddi Mudra are two that I’d recommend exploring.
Something interesting about the mudra shared here, is that it’s actually more than just a mudra. It is a hybrid between a mudra and an asana. In addition to working with the nerve endings in your hands and fingers, you’ll also stimulate the nerves in your shoulder joints.
I’m not going to lie, this is a challenging posture. Over time you’ll find that it becomes easier. It can be helpful to focus on the sensations you feel in your heart and on your lips to center yourself.
Posture: Sit in easy pose (or any comfortable position), spine tall and chin slightly in.
Mantra: Chant Humee Hum Brahm Hum.
Mudra: Raise your right arm in front of your chest, elbow bent 90 degrees, palm faces down. Raise your left arm in front of your chest in the same manner, hold below your right arm. Let your right arm and hand hoover slightly above your left arm and hand. Right fingers will be in line with left elbow and left fingers with right elbow. Imagine this to be similar to I Dream Of Jeanie arms, but with space maintained between the hands and arms. Your arms will be in front of your heart center.
Focus (Drishti): Eyes closed.
Duration: Whatever you can do is good. It is common to practice for 11 minutes. When you are ready to end your practice, inhale and hold your breath. Notice how you are feeling, and exhale when you need to. Take one more deep inhale, pause, notice, and exhale. Slowly open your eyes.
When you first begin to practice this Humee Hum Brahm Hum meditation, you may feel sore if you aren’t used to holding your arms up in this type of position for extended periods of time. Be gentle with yourself and slowly build up to 11 minutes. Take breaks when you need to. When you feel too much stress or friction in your shoulders, take a moment and roll your shoulders. Come back to the practice when you feel ready.
The goal isn’t necessarily to make it to 11 minutes. You don’t need to focus on pushing yourself all the way. Just push yourself beyond what you assume you can do. This way, you won’t feel punished. Instead, you’ll feel encouragement as you build your practice.

Closing Thoughts
Humee Hum Brahm Hum is just one example of the many tools that Kundalini yoga offers to help you center yourself in compassion and truth and become aligned with the Divine. The Aquarian Mantras, Adi Shakti Mantra, Sat Nam, Ek Ong Kar, Ra Ma Da Sa, and Wahe Guru Mantra are also worth exploring.
