Yoga has a way of consistently, slowly transforming us. First it makes our bodies stronger. Later, we notice we’re consistently calmer as well. We’re not as angry. Or rushed.

We become dependent on our yoga practice as a way to make us feel better.

There’s nothing wrong with this (in fact, it’s THE BEST).

Using yoga to restore a sense of balance and harmony in our lives is the point.

However, sometimes we can get stuck in an infinite loop that looks like this:

– We become triggered or upset

– We go to yoga and instantly feel better

– We think we’ve moved on

– A few days later, the same trigger or upset occurs (or occurs in a different format) and we are thrown off-center again.

See, yoga is so effective at re-centering us that if we’re not careful, it can enable an avoidance of facing our fears head on.

Some signs this may be happening to you – despite a strong yoga and meditation practice:

1. You’re consistently thrown off-kilter by the same type of thing

Your mother’s critique of your current single status. Your boss’ harsh feedback. These events take you from calm to crying inside like a five-year-old, time and time again.

2. You’re not walking your talk

You’re preaching to everyone about how awesome this new, Loving Kindness meditation is that you’re practicing, while your inner monologue during your day-to-day tasks is a non-stop stream of berating thoughts like, “I suck. I’m not good enough.” You’re telling everyone about how you want to switch careers, but haven’t gotten into action around anything.

3. You’ve plateaued

You find yourself daydreaming in yoga. You’re B-O-R-E-D and can sail through your Vinyasa class with praise from the teacher, while secretly thinking about what to watch on Netflix tonight.

If any of the above scenarios resonate with you, there is a chance that whatever kind of yoga you’re practicing needs a reboot. It’s not helping you overcome your fears. Because in my mind, there are two types of yoga practices when it comes to our self-care:

Self-maintenance yoga: Exercise and self-care to destress, reground, and rebalance.

Self-WORK yoga: Confronting your fears (head on) and slaying your demons. The aim isn’t to feel good, but to powerfully TRANSFORM essential character traits and reactions hardwired within us in order to EVOLVE.

Sometimes, self-work can slip into your daily self-maintenance practice. But oftentimes, it does not. Or it’s super slow going. That’s when you end up sitting in the passenger seat of your car screaming out loud to your husband:

“It is NOT OK that I still have anger toward this family member. This is COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE. I need to make a radical change and MOVE ON.”

My realization that I’d hit an infinite loop – that my current yoga practice wasn’t helping me slay the demons I needed to slay or busting through my family blocks, got me super reinvigorated and committed to my Kundalini yoga practice. That’s why I’m SO EXCITED to share all the Kundalini techniques I’ve been working on these past few months inside the Uplifted membership this March.

Unlike Hatha or Vinyasa yoga, which is designed to help you balance your “sun” (HA) and “moon” (THA) qualities, Kundalini yoga is designed to slay your ego and
trigger you. Making it perfect to practice when you’re trying to make a MASSIVE IMPACT on you slaying your fears and stepping more and more into your own light.

Kundalini Yoga shows you how you react when you’re in a difficult situation. It serves as a mirror to how you react to difficult situations in
life.
