The short answer: RYT 200 means you’ve completed a 200-hour yoga teacher training and registered with Yoga Alliance. E-RYT 200 means you’ve done that plus logged at least 1,000 hours of teaching experience after certification. The “E” stands for “Experienced.”

Both are credentials through Yoga Alliance, but they signal different levels of experience. Here’s what you need to know.

RYT 200: What It Means

RYT stands for Registered Yoga Teacher. When you see “RYT 200” after someone’s name, it means they have:

  • Completed a 200-hour yoga teacher training at a Yoga Alliance Registered Yoga School (RYS)
  • Registered with Yoga Alliance and paid annual dues
  • Met the minimum curriculum requirements (anatomy, philosophy, teaching methodology, practicum)

This is the entry-level credential for yoga teachers. It qualifies you to teach at most studios, gyms, and online platforms.

E-RYT 200: What It Means

E-RYT stands for Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher. To earn this designation, you need:

  • A completed 200-hour YTT (same as RYT 200)
  • At least 1,000 hours of teaching experience after completing your training
  • At least 2 years of teaching since completing your YTT

The E-RYT 200 tells studios and students that you’re not just trained — you’re seasoned.

Why Does It Matter?

For most teaching jobs, RYT 200 is sufficient. But the E-RYT 200 opens additional doors:

  • Lead teacher trainings: You can serve as a lead trainer at a 200-hour YTT program
  • Offer continuing education: You can apply to become a YACEP (Yoga Alliance Continuing Education Provider)
  • Higher credibility: Some studios and platforms prefer experienced teachers
  • Mentorship roles: Many schools look for E-RYTs to mentor new trainees

How to Go From RYT 200 to E-RYT 200

There’s no additional training or exam required. You simply:

  1. Teach yoga consistently after your 200-hour certification
  2. Log your teaching hours (Yoga Alliance tracks this in your profile)
  3. Once you hit 1,000 hours and 2 years, update your Yoga Alliance profile to reflect E-RYT status

At roughly 10 classes per week, you’d reach 1,000 hours in about 2 years — which aligns with the minimum time requirement.

What About RYT 500 and E-RYT 500?

The same pattern applies at the 500-hour level. RYT 500 means you’ve completed 500 total hours of training (200 + 300). E-RYT 500 means you’ve done that plus logged 2,000 hours of teaching. The 300-hour advanced training is what bridges your RYT 200 to RYT 500.

Whether you’re just starting your teaching journey or ready to level up, what matters most isn’t the letters after your name — it’s the quality of your teaching and the care you bring to your students. 🙏
