The short answer: Your first week of yoga teacher training is equal parts exciting, overwhelming, and deeply moving. You’ll meet your cohort, dive into your first anatomy and philosophy lessons, practice teaching for the first time (yes, already!), and probably cry at least once. That’s all completely normal.

After guiding thousands of students through their first week in my 200-hour program, I can tell you this: every single person feels like they’re the least prepared person in the room. And every single person is wrong. 😊

What Happens in Week 1

Orientation and Community Building

You’ll meet your teachers and your cohort — the group of students you’ll be learning alongside. In online programs, this usually happens on a welcome Zoom call. In person, it’s the first day at the training venue. Either way, expect introductions, logistics, and a lot of nervous energy in the room.

This group will become your yoga family. Many of my graduates say the friendships they formed in training are the most meaningful part of the entire experience.

Your First Anatomy Lessons

Expect to learn about the skeletal system, major muscle groups, and how they relate to yoga poses. If you don’t have a science background, don’t panic. Good programs teach anatomy in a way that’s accessible and practical — not like a medical school lecture. You’ll understand why downward dog feels different in every body.

Yoga Philosophy Introduction

You’ll likely be introduced to foundational texts — the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, the eight limbs of yoga, and core concepts like ahimsa (non-harming) and dharma (purpose). This is where many students realize yoga is so much bigger than poses.

Your First Practice Teaching

Most programs have you practice teaching within the first week — even if it’s just cueing one pose to a partner. Yes, it’s terrifying. Yes, your voice might shake. And yes, it gets easier every single time. This early exposure is intentional — it breaks the ice and shows you that teaching is a skill you build, not a talent you’re born with.

Common Week 1 Feelings

  • “Everyone knows more than me” — They don’t. Everyone feels this
  • “I can’t do half these poses” — You don’t need to. Teaching and doing are different skills
  • “This is a lot of information” — It is. You’re not supposed to absorb it all at once
  • “I might cry” — You probably will. Yoga has a way of opening things up. Let it
  • “I already love my cohort” — This happens fast. Vulnerability bonds people quickly

Tips for Surviving (and Enjoying) Week 1

  • Don’t try to be perfect — be present
  • Take notes but don’t stress about capturing everything — you’ll revisit material many times
  • Rest when you can — training is physically and emotionally intensive
  • Connect with one person — find a study buddy early
  • Trust the process — the program is designed to build on itself. Week 1 is the foundation, not the whole building

The fact that you showed up? That’s the hardest part. Everything that follows is just learning — and you already know how to do that. 🙏
